The Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (THONEH) is a non-profit, non-government, charitable hospital established by the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) for the prevention and treatment of diseases of the eye since 1986. THONEH is a company registered in Malaysia limited by guarantee.
  
 


THONEH is committed to providing comprehensive state-of-art professional services (diagnostic, curative, preventive and rehabilitative) in the nature of eye care for all strata of Malaysian Society, develop quality educational and research programmes and provide community based eye care services.

THONEH is well staffed with qualified and experienced doctors, including 15 Ophthalmologists who are experts in various subspecialties in Ophthalmology. There are 5 Optometrists in the Vision Care Centre with a wide range of experience including Low Vision.

 
 


 

The National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO) was set up in 1997 under the auspices of THONEH in line with it's objective of providing education and research programmes to enhance the development of quality and excellence in continuing medical education and thereby providing for better quality eye-care in the Country and the Region from time to time. The Institute consists of three schools, namely:

(c)School of Post-Graduate Studies and Research


(a) School of Ophthalmic Medical Personnel
The School of Ophthalmic Medical Personnel provides training programmes leading to Certified Ophthalmic Nurses and Technicians to assist the Ophthalmologists to provide quality care for Ophthalmic patients in the Hospital and to the community at large. The course is designed along the syllabus of Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO), USA.


(b) School of Optometry
The School of Optometry, recognising the need for qualified Optometrists both in Malaysia & ASEAN region, is offering a degree course leading to the Bachelor of Science in Optometry (B.S.Optometry) in collaboration with the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, India. The B.S. Optometry course is a four year full-time programme leading to a degree of Bachelor of Science in Optometry. For detailed information on the B.S. Post Graduate Training
Undergraduates in medicine can be trained to specialise in Ophthalmology under the programme. The School of Post Graduate Ophthalmic Studies and Research has accreditation by Royal College of Ophthalmology in London, Royal College of Ophthalomogy in Edinburgh and Royal College of Ophthalmology in Glasgow whereby the School using their facilities of the Hospital and the Institute trains
Medical Officers both local and from overseas in courses leading to the degrees of Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmology, London (FRCS Lon), Fellwoship of the Royal College of Ophthalmology, Edinburgh (FRCS Edin) and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmology, Glasgow (FRCS Glas).

ii. Research
The School also has a number of research projects currently being carried out both locally and regionally through the Asean Association of Eye Hospitals.
